Holiday Flag Display

The Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery Is The Final Resting Place For So Many Men And Women Who Served Our Country In The Military Services.  On Memorial Day, Independence Day And Veterans Day The Flags Of The United States Of America Fly Proudly At The Entrance To The Cemetery.

Around The Sundial Are The Flags Of The Six Military Services – The United States Army, The United States Navy, The United States Marine Corps, The United States Merchant Marine, The United States Air Force And The United States Coast Guard.  Just Beyond The Sundial The POW MIA Flag Honors A Most Special Group Of Heroes.  The “Friends” Is Proud To Sponsor This Tribute To All Who Love America.

Pond Fountains

As Children Many Of Us Remember Coming To Feed The Ducks In The Pond Located In The Southwestern Part Of The Cemetery – A Fond Memory.  The Ducks Still Swim In The Pond Along With The Geese And Create A Pretty, Rural Scene, But Feeding The Waterfowl Is Prohibited, They Do Just Fine By Themselves.  You Can Still Stroll By The Pond, But Walk Carefully And Look Down Before Each Step – That’s Nature At Work.  One Of Our Very First Goals Was To Raise Enough Money To Replace The Fountain Located In The Northern Section Of The Pond And Then To Concentrate On Replacing The One In The Southern Section As A Goal For The Following Year. The Generosity Was Overwhelming And The “Friends” Replaced Both Fountains In The Same Year.

Tree Planting Program

Who Does Not Appreciate The Beauty Of A Tree?  Who Does Not Realize The Importance Of Trees As Part Of Our Environment.

The Cemetery Is Over 150 Years Old And Many Of Our Large, Stately Trees Are In Their Declining Stages.  Trees Would Never Be Taken Down Unnecessarily, But Some Of These Magnificent Trees Are Suffering The Effects Of Storm Damage, Advanced Age And Disease And Are Being Removed At An Alarming Rate.  The “Friends” Has A Tree Replacement Program In Place And Over The Past Few Years Has Purchased And Paid The Planting Costs For Over Forty Trees.  It Will Be Years Before These Trees Achieve The Magnificence Of Their Predecessors, But They Will Grow And Will Be Appreciated By Future Visitors To The Cemetery.
