2018 – 2019 Friends of the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery Membership List

Fall 2018

Thank you to all of our members for contributing so generously. Our membership is yearly and our solicitation letter to current members is mailed in late April or early May. Perspective new members receive letters as we receive their names. Our 2018-2019 membership of over 300 donated over $14,000.00. A list of current members as of October 15 is included. If we have misspelled a name or forgotten someone please let us know.

We participate in the IBM Employee Matching Grant Program and the Central Hudson Employee Matching Grant Program. Please consider filling out the forms and thank you to all of you who take the time to do this.

Sadly Mr. John J. Palmer, Mr. Joseph V. Cilone, Mr. William D. Knauss, Mrs. June R. LeSoine, Mr. Frank L. Tempestilli, Mr. James C. Watkins, Mrs Ruth H. Detjen and Mrs. Joyce C. Ghee have passed away and we send our sympathy to their families and friends.

Seth Nadel was a gifted Hudson Valley artist whose brilliant landscape paintings have brightened the lives of many of us. His Poughkeepsie Journal obituary stated “he not only had a passion for the way the light illuminates the land but a way of seeing and living inside the landscape”. He passed away in December of 2014 and his remains were placed in the columbarium. Earlier this year his wife Patti and his family gifted us with two of Seth’s framed paintings depicting views of the cemetery with the Hudson River in the distance. We immediately gave these paintings to the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery where they are displayed on the wall in the cemetery office. Our newsletters are printed in black and white so we could never show you just how beautiful they are. We hope to have them available for viewing on our web site in the future.

We hosted a living history tour on Sunday, September 23 which attracted over 70 individuals. Our thanks to our volunteers: Linda Delamarter narrator for famed local brewers the Frank family, Ray Delamarter who portrayed U. S. Congressman, Editor and Author Edmund P. Platt, Dave McCarthy who portrayed Industrialist Adolph Shatz, Patty Moore who portrayed Beloved Historian Helen Wilkinson Reynolds, Robin Moore who portrayed Celebrated Aviatot Captain John M. Miller, Andrew Willis who portrayed Civil and Indian War Soldier Louis McLane Hamilton and Town of Poughkeepsie Police Honor Guard Officers James Roosa and Richard Sisilli who narrated the history of the Town of Poughkeepsie Police Memorial and the bench in honor of Actor James Cagney. On Veteran’s Day the American and military service flags will fly proudly at the cemetery entrance as we honor all who served. Because of its circular shape and six flagpole holders the Sundial Monument has become the perfect place to display flags on days of remembrance. Six U. S. flags flew in remembrance of September 11th. Five U. S. flags and the POW/MIA flag flew on POW/MIA Recognition Day which is September 21.
The “Friends” has always used a large portion of our funds to plant trees. Huge storms with excessive wind and rain caused excessive damage to our beautiful trees this year and this money was allotted for tree pruning. Thanks to the generosity of one board member we were able to cover the costs of planting four trees in memory of his wife Mrs. Dorothy R. Young.

We elected board member Linda Delamarter Vice-President and current Secretary Steven Mann was elected Secretary-Treasurer.
Our board meetings are quarterly and are held the second Tuesday of January, April, July and October at 12 noon in the cemetery office. Everyone is welcome. All meetings are open to our membership.

In each newsletter we include an article about the history of the cemetery and those who rest here. Steven Mann has graciously provided us with “tThe Legacy of the Kinkead Family”.

We continue as a volunteer group. Anything we purchase is given to the cemetery. We remain grateful to the Staff of the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. The office and the grounds staff assist us with all of our projects in addition to performing all their cemetery duties. We would not be able to pursue our activities without their help.
